The Christmas season is upon us and it is the perfect time to take a break from working at your home desk and enjoying a jaunt to your local Christmas market.
Here are a few of the most popular Christmas markets around the UK if you need a bit of inspiration.
Starting in the capital, you probably won’t be surprised to know that there are plenty of options when it comes to Christmas markets in the capital. Of course, there is the super-touristy option of Winter Wonderland where you can make use of the fun fair or stop for a crepe or bratwurst and listen to the live music sat on the long dining tables with bench and chairs in the Bavarian Village.
But you could also explore the Southbank Wintertime Market, another one of London’s most popular markets, where there is no shortage of food and drink stalls and handmade gift destinations. One of our favourite options is Winterville on Clapham Common – an ‘alternative’ market option if you will, for those of you that feel you’ve already done one too many Christmas markets. The Christmas market here offers comedy, crazy golf, an ice rink and even a cinema screen which shows Christmas classics.
North of the Capital
Another destination for epic Christmas markets is the Manchester Christmas market which has 350 (!) stalls spread throughout the city. The streets are lined with alpine chalets and for foodies, this is the market to attend! We’re sure there are plenty of wooden chairs and leather bar stools you can rest, chat around a wood table and devour a German beer, or even a spot of paella!
Alternatively, the Birmingham German Christmas market is one of the largest outside Germany and Austria. There are Christmas decorations and carol singers galore, so if you’re struggling to get out of work mode and into Christmas mode, this is the place for you.
Potentially one of the prettiest cities the UK has to offer, Edinburgh looks pretty spectacular at Christmastime. With Santa Land, shows, rides and much more, this is a fantastic option. There’s even a Scottish themes market in the city which offers traditional crafts and foods – perhaps a wonderful place to pick up unique gifts for those who are truly impossible to buy for.
South of the Capital
For somewhere which offers Christmas fun, culture and history all at once, Winchester Christmas market is a fantastic option. Set in the grounds of the Cathedral, in the heart of Winchester City Centre, the Winchester Christmas market is a traditional market which offers plenty of handmade gifts, food stalls, and an ice rink at the centre.
Or alternatively, in the beautiful city of Bath, visit the Christmas market voted the UK’s favourite in 2017. The Christmas market here is spread around the iconic Roman Baths and the Abbey in the centre. A large proportion of the twinkling chalets are housed by businesses in the South West so it’s a great place to support small businesses and find locally sourced gifts which are just a little bit different.
Let us know your favourite Christmas market in the UK (or even perhaps one further afield). Perhaps you’ve taken some photos? We’d love to see your festive snaps!
